Welcome to The Lucky Number! This is a game about rules and winning,* inspired by the game Nomic, The Rule Book: The Building Blocks of Games, "Does Super Mario Bros. (1985) Have Rules?" by Jay Dragon, and the Ship of Theseus.

The main mechanic of the game is other people. Whenever you and another person have a minute, you can pull out The Lucky Number and ask them to add, change, or remove some part of it. Then you get to play through the game with this change in effect.

Needed materials:

  • An empty cassette tape case (one without posts)
  • The Rulebook
  • 20 playing cards, including at least one 7 of any suit
  • One six-sided die
  • One coin
  • 3 other pieces of various ephemera that fit within the cassette tape case (ie. a paperclip, a key, another d6, a small glass ladybug, a monocle, a length of twine, a small box of matches, ect)

Length of play: potentially endless

Number of players: technically one

*You may ask, “Aren’t all games about these things?” Yes. But also no. :3
